Player Movement Policy
Boroondara Power Representative Player Movement Policy, Reviewed: Jan 2025
The purpose of the Boroondara Power Representative Player Movement Policy is to ensure consistency, transparency and simplicity for all involved when player movement occurs across teams or between seasons and when a playing position becomes available in one of the Representative teams.
All players must accept that their continued position in a Representative team is subject to various factors, including:
- Their own match and training performance
- Their adherence to the Player Code of Behaviour
- Movement of other players
- Injuries, illnesses and school commitments
- The specific needs of their team
All parents must accept that the following processes are indicative of how our Representative Program works and that these standards will be adhered to.
Fill-in (required for one-off instance due to injury, illness or absence)
- The coach may decide to play with a minimum of 8 players instead of the usual 10. This is permissible and provides the other players with more court time.
- The fill-in player must be requested from the team in the division directly below the team in need (in the case of a 15/3 and 13/3 teams, they must utilise a training partner) with the coach explaining why a player is required, what is needed and any special requests for certain individuals.
- The coach of the team in the lower division must agree and decide that the player is capable and therefore gets the opportunity to play up. Coaches must remember that this is about the players and must give the opportunity to the player who deserves it whilst keeping the best interests of the association in mind too.
- The player and the player’s parent(s) will be advised.
- Both coaches must be aware and be mindful of the relevant by-laws surrounding player movement at Waverley – 3 games in the higher team (5 games in Premier League) before that player cannot move back down.
- A player cannot play more than 1 game in a night (with the exception of the 13’s à 15’s)
- In circumstances where we are trying to qualify a player for finals, variations to some points in this policy are acceptable.
- The coach may consult with the Boroondara Coach Director if needed, but it is not compulsory.
- The coach must advise the Boroondara Netball Association Director so that the necessary changes can be made on Netball Connect before the match.
Long Term (for injury, illness or absence for more than 4 weeks)
- The Boroondara Coach Director will consult with the relevant coach, that of the team below (or training partner) plus the player and player’s parent(s) to decide on which player is the best fit for the team as a replacement. The Boroondara Selection Committee may also be consulted if necessary. It is an expectation that the player will move teams if requested.
- In extenuating circumstances, players may be assessed in their Saturday matches and invited into the squad to replace the absent player. The Boroondara Coach Director, Boroondara Selection Committee and relevant coaches will discuss this and decide if it is appropriate and provides the best outcome for the association.
Player Movement Down
It is a reality that a player may be moved down during the season or between the two seasons. It is expected that before this occurs, the player has received relevant and appropriate feedback.
- If a player is moved to a lower team during the season, this must be done in consultation with the player, player’s parent(s), the relevant coaches and the Boroondara Coach Director.
- If a player is moved to a lower team between seasons to assist their development, this must be done in consultation with the player, player’s parent(s), the relevant coaches and the Boroondara Coach Director.
- If a player is moved down between seasons because stronger players have trialled due to vacancies (see above), a discussion will be had by the relevant coach, the player, player’s parent(s) and the Boroondara Coach Director with the view to develop the best strategy of communicating with the player concerned.
Some circumstances may require variations to these rules and, as such, will be treated on a case-by-case basis. The final decision will lie with the Boroondara Coach Director, along with input from the Boroondara Selection Committee as required.
Coaches and players are required to respond positively to player movements throughout the year. Good communication between coaches and a willingness to “help out” when players are needed is expected. Coaches & Coach Director are expected to provide comprehensive feedback to players and parents in all situations.
The Boroondara Coach Director and Team Coaches will be responsible for approving player movements during the season. In some circumstances, the Boroondara Selection Committee may also be consulted.
